Lately, it seems that everywhere I turn, someone is chirping praises for Mimicking Birds. After touring with Modest Mouse in 2009, lead singer, Isaac Brock, signed the Portland trio to his record label, Glacial Pace. With some influential heavyweights already in the band’s corner, Mimicking Birds recently released its Brock-produced, self-titled debut album. And I fell in love…
“Burning Stars” is the lead single from Mimicking Birds. With a celestial intro that softly morphs into a mid-tempo indie-folk number (perfect for fans of Bon Iver and Iron & Wine), the song reassures that despite our inescapable mortality, we have to tend to one another now. “All we are is burning stars/ Shining brightly, making sure you don’t fall too far/ I’ll keep an eye on you if you keep one on me…”
In an eerie way, I adore the way those optimistic lyrics are contrasted with echoes and whirring winds that bring to mind the void, the infinite abyss that’s out there, never too far away, just sort of waiting for us. The song is really beautiful, yet simultaneously sparse in a way that’s never frightened me so much.
