Oryx and Crake, a nine-person band anchored by husband-and-wife songwriting team, Ryan Peoples and Rebekah Goode-Peoples, is named after Margaret Atwood’s novel. Their lyrics, of real life and “overactive imaginations” honors their literary namesake and weaves together musical elements of past, present, and yes, the future.
The Atlanta, Georgia ensemble, steadily gaining exposure and acclaim in its hometown, has been compared to the likes of Wilco, Portishead, and the Mamas and the Papas (minus the rumored sandwich choking incident), and they’ve shared the stage with bands like Bowerbirds and Toro y Moi.
“Fun Funeral” combines the same oxymoronic elements of its title throughout its sound. Elegiac violins mix with fuzzy guitars, and vocals that fade in and out of distortion. It’s brooding and at times, desperate, beseeching your dark side to come out and play.
The band’s self-titled debut is out now. Pick it up here.
