Back in February, I traveled to Champaign, IL with my brother to witness this. We took his car, which also meant his music: The Essential Willie Nelson. Fine by me, considering that he was preaching Alan Jackson over Christmas.
Next trip, though, I think we can meet in the middle and blast some Kacey Musgraves. Although I’d tend to place her closer to Willie — she does sing about rolling joints, after all — there is a strong sense of “pop country,” or whatever you want to call it, here on “Silver Lining.” But hey, if ZZ Ward can have “Dirty Shine,” perhaps Kacey Musgraves can latch on to “Rebel Twang.” Sounds fair to me.
