Here at Speakers in Code, we’re feeling a little weepy ’cause our babies are all grown up. Yup, the Chicago new-wave quartet, California Wives, has signed to Vagrant Records and is getting ready to drop their debut album, Art History, on prepped ears all ’round the country.
But, let’s rewind a sec. Back in October 2010, we gave California Wives the JOTD with “Blood Red Youth,” a jam that boasts dreamy-pop landscapes and juice-box fizziness. Later on, the gents curated a 10 to Spin for us: Songs to Survive the Brutal Chicago Winter. The list is full of the ’80s influences that spot their sound.
So, you can see why we’re weeping like empty nesters whose all-grown-up indie popsters have flown the coop.
California Wives recently announced the band would tour with Stars and Diamond Rings to support the new album. Catch ’em opening for STARS (!) at Plush in Saint Louis on October 5th.
Make sure you lend those pretty peepers and, of course, those essential ears to California Wives. Start with the album’s first two singles, “Purple” and “Marianne.” GO!
