the day of reckoning’s upon me
but right now i need some rest
I don’t know how the weather is where you guys are, but December and January have been languid and grey in North Carolina; sometimes cold, sometimes warm, sometimes rainy, occasionally sunny, but mostly just days that feel long without being long, lazy days, the kind of days that need six minute songs that are not just songs, but also soundscapes, landscapes, escapes.
Wooden Wand, the band name of James Jackson Toth, gives you all of those ‘scapes in “Southern Colorado Song”, which is full of scratched-up guitars and Toth’s plaintive, exhausted voice. The lyrics grabbed me, the sound held me, and like Damien Jurado’s Maraqopa, which hung in my top five albums of 2012 for ten straight months, Wooden Wand’s Blood Oaths of the New Blues will likely stick with me the same way for all of 2013.
Stream “Southern Colorado Song” below. Blood Oaths of the New Blues comes out on Fire Records on 1/8/2013.
