After spending the bulk of the past year on the road in support of last November’s excellent LP, Sports, Weekend has since been hard at work on their highly anticipated followup effort. Prior to their European tour in July, the band spent three weeks in the studio recording tracks that would become an EP, now simply entitled Red. Prepare yourself for yet another gorgeous, violent, sonic assault, because this beeping thing packs a serious punch, y’all!
The first new track they’re sharing, “Hazel,” is brilliant – definitely deserving of Jam of the Day status. A noise-pop gem, it’s three minutes and 50 seconds of cascading bass chord melody, guitar clangor, and a chorus most bands would kill to create.
Red is the perfect next step for Weekend. Packing more elements into five songs than a lot of bands struggle to add into a whole record, pointing the way forward towards Weekend’s next long-player, due sometime in 2012.
Be sure to pick it up the new EP when it drops September 20th, on Slumberland Records.
