L.A.’s Warpaint is just about the buzziest buzz band out at the moment. And “Undertow,” the first single from the band’s ridiculously anticipated debut album, The Fool, calls to mind pretty much every great alt-rock female group known to man.
Its all-lady harmonies twirl between kick-ass guitar breakdowns to make a JOTD that is both down AND dirty, yet calls you back to it time and again by offering up unheard pieces upon each listen. It is the perfect late-year fit in a long line of 2010 female-fronted bands.
And now that I think of it, this past year has indeed seen it’s fair share of the ladies. From Beach House to Best Coast, I don’t have enough fingers to count all the bands that have truly broken out here of late. (Trust me – I tried).
Warpaint’s breakout is inevitable. They are already hitting the road with this year’s Mercury Music Prize winners, and partially female-fronted band, The xx, on tour through the fall.
Pick up the “Undertow” MP3 below. The Fool is due on Rough Trade on October 25th.
