There is tradition of eating apples dipped in honey during the Jewish New Year festival Rosh Hashanah as a way of ushering in a sweet new year. Given that festivities got under way last night (L’ashanah tovah!), I thought a musical equivalent of such a sweet treat might be in order.
Thankfully, we received SALES’ debut EP just in time to satiate us during this New Year celebration. The sweetness of the EP’s lead track, “renee,” isn’t of the saccharine, bubblgum-y, variety, but is quite effectively compared the traditional treat of apples dipped in raw honey: crisp and syrupy, with a pleasantly tart undertaste; rich in flavor but never overbearing; familiar, yet distinctly gratifying and unique.
