Seattle’s Pickwick was, at first, one of those bands where I wasn’t sure the music would live up to the hype. I mean, what bands do?
Pickwick does. 2013’s Can’t Talk Medicine is a high-energy fusion of funk, soul, Seattle’s indie rock sound, and indelible hooks that lodge in your ears and stay there. The record is, from start to finish, one of the best of the year — there isn’t a weak track on it. It shimmies, shakes, bellows, grooves, and flat out rocks. “Staged Names”, which you can stream below, is a perfect example of it: a raucous yet thoughtful, groovy yet meticulously crafted, indie funk dance hall gem.
Pickwick should already be on your radar: they’ve been on almost everyone else’s. If they haven’t, though, check this out and get with the crowd, because the hype is real.
Pickwick plays Local 506 on Monday, 4/29, with Basia Bulat. Tickets are $10 at the door and the show starts at 8:30. Get there early; it wouldn’t surprise me if this one sold out.
