Happy Valentine’s Day, lovers.
Party Dolls aren’t an Athens, Ga, supergroup; that’s because Athens, like Chapel Hill, doesn’t have supergroups. What they have is “other projects”, whenever a band takes a hiatus and a songwriter has more output than they know what to do with. Party Dolls started a year ago in just that situation, when only half of the hard rocking’ District Attorneys could make a Valentine’s Day gig — now they’ve expanded in occasionally include members of the DAs as well as Tedo Stone and Crooked Fingers.
“Vampire” is frontman Drew Beskin’s attempt to write a love song and “not feeling up to the challenge”, he says. I think, though, that’s it’s a perfect love song; the chorus couplet quoted above is damn romantic to me. It’s a rain on a windshield ballad, the kind of song you want on the radio when you’re fogging up a car like you were still a teenager. The whole album, Love Wars Baby, drops today in honor of last year’s 2/14, and it’s not as wistfully muted and longing as “Vampire”, but it’s all as clever.
