Hey y’all. Speakers in Code is co-hosting the upcoming Mates of State and Generationals show at The Firebird on Halloween night. The only thing that’s gonna be creepy is how much I fawn all over these indie-pop music makers. If you live in Saint Louis and you fancy yourself a tastemaker of sorts, you’ll want to get your tickets to this show HERE and let us know you’re coming HERE.
Mates of State, husband and wife duo (Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner), have our Jam of the Day with the recent single, “Palomino” from the band’s seventh LP, Mountaintops.
“Palomino” is awash in celestial shimmers, adding textures to boy-girl vocals. That repeated line, “You know you’re not in hell,” becomes perkily ominous, almost repeated one too many times for poor Palomino to really believe it. The song retracts and builds a number of times, taking it to anthemic heights. Give it a listen and a download if it floats your boat and finds your lost remote.
Mountaintops is out now via Barsuk Records.
