NoiseTrade can be a dicey proposition – sometimes it’s full of great free music and the subsequent ability to tip a group whose release you like after trying it, but more often than not for me, it’s a miss, the stuff I acquire just not suiting my taste or my mood or my predilection for, well, music that’s played well.
The Last Bison is not one of those NoiseTrade failures, not in the slightest. I picked up their 2011 album Quill in the spring and fell absolutely, totally in love. At the time, the band was playing under the name “Bison”, and July brought a name change, and the fall has brought a fresh EP, from which “Switzerland” comes. Their sound is a little like a Virginia mountain top, a little like the Great Dismal Swamp where frontman Ben Hardesty was raised, and all theirs, in a mellow, chamber folk kind of Southern way. The Last Bison are a treasure, and you should discover them now, because they’re about to be huge.
Click through to their Soundcloud page to listen and download, and look for their second LP in early 2013.
