Josh Tillman is just one of those guys that never disappoints. After playing drums and providing harmony vocals in Fleet Foxes for a few years, he left Seattle behind for sunny L.A. While there Josh invented a new persona by the name of Father John Misty, recorded one of the best (and easily most clever) records of 2012, and met his wife Emma.
The Tillman’s have now teamed up to produce a film called The History of Caves, which marks Emma’s directorial debut and Josh’s first stab at film scoring. The score came out in limited vinyl release for Record Store Day on Black Friday, and I am kicking the shit out of myself for not hunting down one of the 2,000 copies that were released. Maybe it’s just because of my personal adoration of the acoustic guitar, but this soundtrack is kinda awe-inspiring. I’ve been trying to deduce what exactly made me instantly love it so much, and I think it has to do with the feel of it all. There’s a distinct gait to Josh’s sparse finger style guitar that is unlike anything you hear in popular music today; slightly off time and raw, with production that, to me, sounds like long dead leaves and dirty, brown glass bottles. It’s earthy and textural without trying too hard to be.
The album stream and trailer for The History of Caves are below. There’s no official release date for the film yet, but it’s slated to premier on Amazon, iTunes, and Netflix at some point this year.
