Inventions’ eponymous debut album satisfied our longing for quality ambient music way back in 2014, and they’re about to unleash their second LP, Maze of Wood, upon the world. “Escapers” is the latest single to be released and it signals the duo’s progression into darker, more experimental composition. The track begins with a heavily effected vocal sample proclaiming “I wanted to do something that I don’t know how to do.” It intensifies, adding airy electronics and a drum machine that really obscures the beat. This song is certainly a little more oblique than the decidedly ambient music of the duo’s debut, but it’s a welcome change of pace in a genre that can sometimes suffer from lack of imagination.
