Last Saturday night, after fourteen hours of traveling, I finally got into a taxi headed home from the airport. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing the world. But after a week of sleeping in someone else’s bed and an entire day of clusterfucks, a taxi from the airport feels almost as good as the paradise that I have left. At least, to me.
Ironically, I stumbled across Grovesnor aka Rob Smoughton aka the drummer for Hot Chip and his first single titled “Taxi From The Airport” the day I returned from my trip. Still savoring the satisfaction of being newly home and truly comfortable once again, I quickly settled into this song that instantly sounded so familiar to me, a true luxury.
The Guardian hilariously describes it as “Barry White grappling in a water bed with Brian Eno.” The entire album is said to have hints of Billy Joel and Hall and Oates, updated with the electro-pop elements that Hot Chip has already beautifully mastered. It reminds me a little bit of Rod Stewart doing his thang in the 80s, maybe around the Tonight I’m Yours (“Young Turks”) era. In a good way, of course.
