Fuck the flux capacitor and it’s 1.21 gigawatts of power. We don’t need no stinkin’ souped-up Delorean to take us back in time. We have the power of music for that, and few offer as powerful a trip down memory lane for me, than “Swimming in ’99,” because what Golden Suits, aka Fred Nicolaus, has done here inadvertently, is combine the best parts of my best-loved-bands at pinpointed times of my life.
This song recalls happy, sunny days in or or around 2000. Riding with my friends to the beach, and blaring indie-jams out of the sunroof of my velour seated ’88 Ninety-Eight Oldsmobile (classy!) For me, this song recalls the song structure of early Nada Surf, with the phrasing of pre-Deschanel Gibbard. Wrapped together with some of the twinkle and whit of Clem Snide — this song is an assault to my auditory and nervous senses.
But that’s not to say it’s not fresh, or forward looking. Because we all take previous experience into what we see and hear. So you make up your own mind…but just make sure to listen.
