Picture a black ’65 Lincoln Continental with suicide doors, speeding down Mulholland Drive at 3 o’clock in the morning. A cigarette burns out in the ashtray and a worn out copy of The Dharma Bums is haphazardly tossed on the passenger seat, along with the day’s paper.
Top down on a cool October night, our Jam of the Day, “Waterfall,” by California’s The Fresh & Onlys is blaring from the speakers while the tires squeal lightly as the car turns sharply left, then right working it’s way up the winding hill. Lights glitter below and the air holds the smell of burnt tobacco and wild rosemary from the roadside. Gasoline and aftershave.
Gloomy guitars jangle flawlessly as angelic voices call out of the tugging wind and darkness, pleading with singer Tim Cohen to deliver the hazy, yet romantic vocals. Circulating, these elements then combine, creating a setting that accentuates the mood perfectly.
Close your eyes and download the song below, although it was made for vinyl. If you like it, make sure to check out the band’s third LP Play It Strange on October 12th via In The Red Records.
