With its psychadelic guitars and haunted, echoing vocals, “Nothing Is The News” opens Damien Jurado’s Maraqopa with five and a half minutes of the bleakest, loneliest landscape possible. It’s a track for watching the sun rise over a barren but beautiful desert alone, a song that sets the tone for Jurado’s masterpiece of a record not with hooks but with atmosphere: “Nothing you have, and all that you want is gone…”
It’s a song that’s full of potential like a new day, one that makes you hold your breath with the tension of it while you wait to hear where the guitars resolve, and like most fresh starts, it fades away while you’re still holding your breath.
Jurado has just wrapped up his first leg of touring to support Maraqopa, but he’ll be back on the road in August and in Raleigh in September for the Hopscotch Music Festival.
