But if I can’t be Elvis Presley
I don’t wanna be no one
Curtis Eller plays the banjo, occasionally yodels, and writes smart, thoughtful songs about a variety of subject matter — most of it historical. On “Old Time Religion”, the lead track from his latest release, How To Make It In Hollywood, he’s backed by an excellent permanent band in a slinky, sultry, Southern track full of gospel backing vocals and sin. With an eerie organ track, fuzzy guitars, and a driving beat, it’s the perfect song to lead off a record that’s full of history, the present, and the future. It’s grimy, creepy, and utterly captivating.
You can stream “Old Time Religion” below, and stream or buy the whole album over on Bandcamp.
Triangle, the official release show is tonight, January 31, at Motorco Music Hall in Durham, with New Town Drunks opening. 9PM, $8.
