A braid is “a complex structure or pattern formed by intertwining three or more strands of flexible material such as textile fibers, wire, or human hair.” Braids is a band who makes complex musical structures or patterns by intertwining three or more elements such as guitars, vocals, drums, and synthesizers. Who would have thunk it – music and weaving have so much in common!
Braids’ “Lemonade,” which just so happens to be our Jam of the Day, is a gorgeous example of the above comparison. Synths begin the song by themselves, but quickly percussion is added, then lead vocals, keys, and angelic chants all follow suit. Before we know it, they are all mixed up, creating a complete, and powerful experience that’s damn near euphoric.
And as if just hearing the song isn’t cool enough, we’ll be catching them this weekend at the 2011 Hopscotch Festival! Braids playing Hopscotch? It’s like a Norman Rockwell painting or something!
We’ll let you know how it goes, but in the meantime, pick up the debut Native Speaker, right here.
