If songs were baseball cards, Son Volt’s “Windfall” would be the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. of alt-country/americana. It’s easy to notice its popularity — Son Volt fans have listened to the song as often as a Banana Republic employee might hear “Rolling in the Deep” while folding clothes on the job. I know this because everyone was either mouthing the words or singing along when Farrar finally let it loose last night at The Pageant.
Storming out of the gate with “Down To the Wire” and “The Picture,” Son Volt then heavily leaned (almost too much) on their recent release, Honky Tonk, for most of the show. Things picked back up with “No Turning Back,” “Voodoo Candle,” “Drown,” “Bandages and Scars,” and the main-set closing “Afterglow 61.” Long live the Volt.
