They don’t sing.
Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero don’t need to. They play Yamaha acoustic guitars with nylon strings, creating sounds I’ve never heard. Sometimes a smiling Gabriela twirls around, eyes closed, while thrashing her instrument; sometimes Rodrigo stands stoically in the spotlight, playing quickly but in no apparent hurry. They’re two talents who were obviously made to create music together.
When they begin “Hanuman,” the crowd erupts, and Rodrigo y Gabriela deliver into an extended encore that ends with the Mexican duo taking multiple bows. Never in my life did 90 minutes of instrumental music sound so perfect. Last night was a thrill and a pleasure.
