Just when I finally made it through the entire batch of My So-Called Life reruns on The Sundance Channel, Mazzy Star decides to release a couple of singles for the first time in fifteen years. Lord, will I ever stop reliving the angst of my fourteen year old self? Or channeling Angela Chase? At least I gave away my Doc Martens a long, long time ago.
Really, considering I grew up in a cornfield, I have no idea what I was doing listening to Mazzy Star’s So Tonight That I Might See, while all of my peers were still bumping The Chronic. (Okay, let’s get serious. I was, too.) But, the lovely country-psych-pop-shoegaziness was utterly lost on me back then.
Thanks to today’s Pajammy Jam of the Day, one of the two comeback singles from the duo of Hope Sandoval and David Roback, I cannot wait to dive back into So Tonight and recapture the intensely poignant gut reaction I had to the album over seventeen years ago. Who cares that I couldn’t qualify the genre-bending? I think I like it better that I could not; I just appreciated the sounds. As I laid across my bed, pondering lost friendships and writing bad poetry. Yes, indeed.
Mazzy Star will release its first album since 1996 sometime next year and also announce tour dates. There’s no official album title or release date just yet. Hang on to your choker.
