“Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cheshire Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Alice: I don’t much care where.
The Cheshire Cat: Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go.
Alice: …So long as I get somewhere.
The Cheshire Cat: Oh, you’re sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Having recently become a Spotify Premium user, I find myself going down rabbit hole after rabbit hole, discovering new sonic worlds. Some days, I feel like Alice in Wonderland, plummeting into a surreal place. Speaking of holes, the lead-off track on Electric Guest‘s debut album Mondo reminds me of these little digital journeys I lose myself in. “Holes” is imbued with 8-bit cracks that perfectly match the tone; Afraid to start but longing to reach a destination, the emotional and musical gaps are filled with bass, beats and a sense of hope that propel the song forward. It’s an ethereal quest for meaning and by far one of the best tracks of 2012.
