Every time I think that the Triangle has pulled out all the stops on unusual concert venues, they find a way to top it. Last night, the Cat’s Cradle partnered with the Town of Carrboro to present a free show on the Carrboro Town Commons, giving out 5,000 ticket vouchers at no cost to see NC native Tift Merritt and locals Megafaun and Mandolin Orange play on a perfect fall evening. It looked like all 5,000 folks who claimed vouchers turned out, an enthusiastic crowd who watched Mandolin Orange play through the sunset, Megafaun blast away the twilight, and Tift and her band play an hour and a half set through the deepening evening. Tift played heavily from her upcoming Yep Roc release, and it all sounds amazing — I can’t wait to hear the album.
It was a beautiful evening, the sort of magic night that makes me proud to call North Carolina and the Triangle home.
