When Sufjan Stevens brought his tour supporting Carrie & Lowell to the Peabody Opera House in St. Louis, the question was: how low key and quiet would the show be? The songs on Carrie & Lowell deal mostly with death and forgiveness, and do not sound anything like Stevens’ breakthrough album, Illinois.
To his credit, Stevens heavily featured his new songs, delivering an intense and personal show, one that if you weren’t familiar with the material, it might have been hard to follow. But this is live music, a time to embrace unpredictability and emotion, and Stevens reminded us of that power once again. All we had to do was listen.
