Given the name one might assume that Sylvan Esso is some sort of mystical Eastern European troubadour, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The side project of Mountain Man‘s Amelia Meath and Megafun‘s Nick Sanborn, the duo makes music wholly unlike either of their original bands. A combination of Meath’s arresting, elegant vocals and Sanborn’s expertly crafted electronic textures, they’re quite difficult to classify. Imagine a folkier, toned down Purity Ring, with more vocal emphasis and diversity. But so much more than that.
The pair have only put out one double A side single thus far, but “Hey Mami”is all you need to tell that this is going to be a fruitful, awesome ongoing collaboration. It’s just vocals and clapping for the first half of the song and it doesn’t need anything else, until Sanborn’s wicked synth beat comes in for the kill.
They’re playing early on Thursday at Hopscotch, and one would be a fool to miss them.
Go forward and conquer, y’all.
